ABC 13, Southern Team Auto Mall Recognize Virginia's Classroom Heroes

As the school year kicked off, so did ABC 13’s new initiative to recognize exceptional teachers right here in the heart of Virginia. We can all think of a great teacher–whether it be one from our childhood, perhaps one today for our kids, or even a family member in the profession. ABC 13 launched “Classroom Heroes in the Heart of Virginia” to recognize and thank those who go above and beyond in their work as a teacher.

Southern Team Auto Mall encourages local ABC 13 viewers to nominate teachers monthly and let the judges do the rest as they select a winner from the submissions. Once a winner is chosen, ABC 13, along with Southern Team Auto Mall, creates a surprise celebration to honor the teachers for their immeasurable contributions. If you know of a teacher worthy of recognition, please submit their nomination here. ABC 13 asks that you be as detailed as possible to help the judges understand what sets this teacher apart from the rest and why they’re worthy of acknowledgment.

In recognition of an individual teacher’s outstanding efforts, winners receive $500 in gift cards, including a $250 Amazon gift card generously provided by ABC 13, and a $250 VISA gift card graciously sponsored by Southern Team Auto Mall. Additionally, as the school year progresses, winners also have the opportunity to be awarded a year-long lease on a brand new Subaru, courtesy of Southern Team as well. At the conclusion of the school year, the public will have the chance to cast votes for the most exceptional winner.

September 2023 Classroom Hero

ABC 13 recently unveiled the FIRST-ever winner of its “Classroom Heroes in the Heart of Virginia” initiative: Mrs. Desiree May from Tomahawk Elementary in Campbell County. Mrs. May expressed shock at being the very first winner, but ABC 13’s visit to her classroom highlighted what makes her such a success. The nomination letter showcased Mrs. May’s exceptional dedication to her students–both during regular school hours and beyond. She regularly stayed late, contributed to afterschool programs, and took the lead in Tomahawk Elementary’s Girls on the Run initiative. Mrs. May was also lauded for creating an inclusive classroom environment, where she consistently treats her students with dignity and respect while prioritizing their emotional and academic well-being.

Southern Team Auto Mall is proud to expand its reach into the local community alongside ABC 13, centering and rewarding individuals who go above and beyond in everyday life and in service of others. Be sure to follow Virginia’s Classroom Hero’s yearlong journey via Southern Team Auto Mall’s social media. And remember, if you know a teacher going the extra mile, be sure to nominate them!
